A&S

At the May Day Moot we wish to choose our A&S Champion. At the suggestion of our previous A&S Champion, Sol, the theme for this year's A&S Showcase, by which we will choose our Champion, is Inspiration. As a Champion should inspire others, so do we wish to be inspired by what we see and hear from our Champion.

What, exactly, does this mean? Before one is willing to put time and effort into creating a project, one must be inspired to do so. Inspiration may be a person you met, something you saw or read or heard, a class you attended or taught, or anything else. Please show us the process and product of what inspired you. Your project does not need to be completed, nor does it need to be successful. You do not need to be experienced and accomplished in the arts and sciences to participate. Beginners are encouraged to enter and show us their enthusiasms. And, finally, it does not need to be a recent project - inspiration from 20 years ago is just as valid as that from last year.

There does need to be some result to show, however. Inspiration that does not result in something concrete does not count as inspiration for the purposes of this activity. This can include performances as well as objects. Because of the nature of this event (we're choosing our Champion here), team entries are not allowed. More than one person can play a part, however it should be about one person's inspiration.

Documentation of how you were inspired, as well as an explanation of your project's authenticity (i.e. how it is period), is strongly encouraged. We will speak to each entrant regardless of how much written information is provided.

If you have any questions about the Showcase, please contact Raito or Æsa. We will provide details soon about when the face-to-face portion will be held during the moot. If you plan to participate, we would love to know about it in advance, but preregistration is not required.

Heavy Weapons Championship

Greetings unto all members of our Great Barony,

Being the Baronial Champion for Heavy Weapons, and as our May Day Event draws near, I find myself tasked with the priviledge and honor of organizing the tourney for those of our great warriors that wish to enter the list. I encourage all of our warriors to come out and enter the list. I would ask of any that are interested to please respond to me off list. An email with your SCA name and all authorizations you currently have, or may have as of the date of the event, will be sufficient. I am asking about authorizations so that I may plan the tourney accordingly, and not inadvertantly prevent one from participating.

The tourney will be a standard double elimination with the final consisting of a best of five. Each round of the final will be a different weapon set. Please keep in mind that our noble and esteemed Baron and Baroness will select a Champion from the list of warriors. Winning the tournament is not necessary to receive the priviledge of bearing the Brand of Jararvellir, or more affectionately referred to as the Baronial I-Beam.

I look forward to seeing you all there !

Honor before Victory,

In humble service to Crown and Kingdom,

Lothar de la Croix

Rapier Championship

As the current rapier champion I am told it falls to me to plan out the format for the rapier championship to be done at May day, this next weekend.

I am going to hold a tournament by challenge- all combatants should present themselves to the list table at 2pm (after getting themselves inspected, that is). Participants names will be put on the list and questions about the rules will be answered. Basically, after a challenge is accepted, both combatants go to the list table and each rolls a die to see how they will face their opponent.

1=single rapier, 2=rapier and dagger, 3=rapier and rigid parry, 4=rapier and non-rigid parry, 5=case of rapier, 6= fencer's choice, but your attacks only count if they strike a limb. Loss of one leg and one arm shall count as a defeat.

Winner reports to the list. Once the folks who run the list decide that enough time has passed and enough fun has been had, the two participants with the most victories at that point will face one another in a two-out-of three final with weapons of their own choosing. As is traditional, while the victor of this bout will be declared the winner the baron and baroness shall select their new rapier champion at their discretion. I hope to see many of you there!
